DETAILS:

Position Overview:
Supervises dredge operations and assigned staff under the general supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor.

Examples of Essential Duties:

  1. Supervises operation and maintenance of dredge, tug and other Port vessels and related equipment. Gives recommendations for dredging locations and gives estimates for costs and completion dates.
  2. Responsible for purchasing fuel and marine products for the operation of the marine equipment to ensure safe, effective operations.
  3. Assists in formation of marine maintenance budget by making effective recommendations on funds needed.
  4. Maintains operating and maintenance records and logs for marine equipment.
  5. Prioritizes and delegates dredge operation and related maintenance tasks.
  6. Performs maintenance activities when not engaged in tasks as Dredge Captain.
  7. Responsible for the accurate inventory, safeguard of equipment and provision of supplies to adequately perform the jobs assigned.
  8. Calculates specifications for materials for Port operations to complete marine projects (such as dredge yardage, fuel consumption and lineal feet of material).
  9. Follows proper safety rules set by law and the Port and attends regular safety meetings.
  10. May assist in hiring temporary/seasonal help from longshore hall.
  11. Keeps abreast of regulatory matters affecting the Port’s dredge operation.
  12. Assists in development and marketing of dredging services for others.
  13. Insures that dredge and related equipment is in proper working order and available for commencement of dredge operations at the beginning of the dredge season.

Experience and Training:
High school graduation or equivalency with five years working as leverman on dredge with land maintenance or construction, or any equivalent combination of experience and training that demonstrates knowledge, skills and ability to perform the above described duties.

Knowledge:
Considerable knowledge of marine and land maintenance including the materials and equipment used; safe and proper operation of such equipment as well as other safety standards required by law and Port rules.  Considerable experience and knowledge of at least one of the following and reasonable experience and knowledge of the balance of: plumbing; carpentry; welding; blueprint interpretation; electrical systems; vehicle repair and maintenance; diesel motor maintenance.

Skills:
Use of hand and power tools; use of heavy equipment such as dump trucks, cats, cranes and backhoes; safe operation of motor vehicles.

Ability:
Effectively communicate on a phone and two-way radio; maintain confidentiality; accurately classify, file and retrieve materials; maintain effective working relationships with the public and other employees; handle complaints and problems courteously; establish priorities and delegate tasks; make effective independent decisions; supervise others; engage in heavy physical labor at times.

Licenses or Certificates:
Coast Guard Licensed Operator

This position is non-exempt with an hourly wage between $29.78 and $31.58 depending on experience.  The position includes health and retirement benefits, paid vacation and sick leave, etc.
