Boatyard Lift & Haul Out Piers

The Port of Astoria is actively seeking funding to replace its aging vessel lift, a critical component of boatyard operations. The current lift is depreciating rapidly; failure would bring boatyard operations to a near-standstill, disrupting an essential service to the regional marine industry.

The importance of the boatyard has grown, as is evident by the 88% increase in haul outs from 2018 to 2024. Further, the steadily increasing size of commercial fishing vessels has resulted in the lift operating at or near capacity more frequently than in the past. The greater number of haul outs and the larger vessels have exacerbated wear and tear on the lift.

The boatyard is a key contributor to the regional marine innovation cluster (RIC). Another major component of the RIC is Pier 2 West; fish processing operations on the pier contribute over $132 million to the Oregon economy each year. Boatyard operations center around the vessel lift; its failure would substantially eliminate the boatyard’s contribution to the marine RIC and adversely affect the regional economic benefits flowing therefrom. As a public asset, the boatyard is vital for realizing the synergies and efficiencies of Astoria’s marine-based industries.

Consequently, the Port remains committed to replacing the aging lift and ensuring the long-term viability of both the boatyard and the people that rely on it.
